Reading Enrichment
Reading Is Fundamental or RIF Program
In grades two through five, the students receive free books and participate in special activities designed to encourage them to discover Reading as a great leisure activity. The RIF program,or READING IS FUNDAMENTAL, is a national program which provides matching funds to purchase books and hold contest and events which encourage the students to read for fun! Books are usually distributed three times a year. However, at present, we have received a grant from PNC Bank that allows us to buy books of better quality and to distribute books four times a year.
Pizza Hut Book-It
Students in grades K - 6 receive rewards from Pizza Hut or meeting personal and class reading goals.
Science Enrichment
Bayer Corporation Adopt -a - Scientist Program employees conduct workshops at various grade levels which teach science concepts and encourage students to consider choosing a career in the field of science.Our seventh and eighth graders participate in the Science Olympiad at California University and we hold an annual school science fair.
Academic Competitions
Middle school students also participate in the Post Gazette/Scripps Howard Spelling Bee, Math Counts Competition, 24 Math Competition, and the National Geography Bee.
Thinking Caps
Students in grades three through eight may enroll, if they qualify, in a Thinking Caps program, for enrichment. Higher level thinking skills with emphasis on creativity, fluency, and flexibility in the thought process are emphasized using games, puzzles, internet sites and competitions such as the Thinking Caps Bowl. Thinking Caps students attend activities for advanced students at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit.We also participate in the C- Mites program for advanced students through Carnegie-Mellon University and we are a C-Mites Testing Center. In addition, we recommend students for the Johns Hopkins Talent Search and have a partnership with the Allegheny Intermediate Unit through which our Thinking Caps students attend competitions and activities for gifted students.
Canevin Math and Science Acceleration
Our high achieving eighth grade students attend Physical Science and Algebra 1 classes at Canevin Catholic High School.Students go directly to Canevin High School for the first two periods in the morning and then return to St. Philip for other subjects. Transportation to Canevin is provided by the school district in which the student resides. Transportation back to St. Philip School is the student's responsibility.
