Meet an Engineer

As a part of the WQED Design Lives Here project, Mr. Paul Alessio, a civil engineer for the City of Pittsburgh, visited the Thinking Caps students to discuss engineering as a career choice and to help the students with an engineering challenge. The class was asked to create a "glow stick" from Christmas lights, battery cap, battery, and tape .There were as many designs as they were groups but all were successful in completing the objective of making a working electric circuit.

Mr Alessio comes courtesy of  an innovative project that provides engineering and design activities as well as mentors to middle school classes throughout the region. The Design Lives Here initiative is an unique partnership between WQED Multimedia, the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania, MSA, PPG, and other tech companies which sponsors an education outreach program that promotes learning about engineering via interactive teaching, mentoring, and challenge activities.

The students must complete 3 challenges during their class time and the program will culminate with a challenge day at WQED during which the St. Philip students will pitch an invention they have created and be  teamed with students from other Design schools to face 3 additional engineering challenges.
