 A Very Special Flag

When the events of September 11 unfolded, our children were understandibly confused and questioned what they might do to help those who had suffered so much. Their concerns inspired the President and Vice President of the PTG, Linda Klimek and Debbie Blaich, to design a project that would allow the children to express their emotions and show their love. With the help of their husbands and other PTG members, Linda and Debbie constructed a large flag from bed sheets. They then organized the children in long lines to place their handprints on the flag in rows to form the stars and stripes. As the children waited their turns, they prayed for the victims of the tragedy. The handprints of the teachers and staff of St. Philip School were also included with Fr. Walt's print unintentionally forming a dove. After its display in church for the weekend Masses, the flag was to be sent to one of the New York fire companies. But Mrs. Kimek's boss, a New Yorker, heard about the flag and asked to take it to his parish that had lost several parishioners on September 11. The Flag was accepted with gratitude by the children in the New York Parish school, many of whom tried to find handprints on the flag that matched their own. The flag has been passed on to other Catholic Schools in the New York area and brings a sense of caring and comfort to both those who sent it and to those who receive it. The flag was featured on KDKA news and in an article in the Post Gazette. Click on the flag to see the article.

The St.Philip School Family attempts always to put the Gospel virtues into practice by extending our focus beyond our own needs to those of the parish and town community. We also invite and appreciate the parish and community to share their resources and expertise with our students. Our students contribute to and interact with Crafton Meals on Wheels, Robinson Developmental Center, Allegheny Valley School for the mentally challenged, and our own parish elderly through our Prayer Partners program.

Heinz Corporation, Bayer Corporation, PNC Bank, and the Crafton Municipal Community have all extended courtesies and services to our students.

Duquesne University School of Education students have been using our school as a site for their observations and practicums. Most recently, we have entered into a consortium with Canevin Catholic High School and Duquesne University to use an $80,000 grant from the Heinz foundation to study integration of technology into Catholic Schools.
